Self-Exile

“In reality exile is frequently ended gradually, with no dramatic external events to mark its passing. The haze in the air evaporates and the world comes into focus; seeking gives way to finding; anxiety to satisfaction. Nothing is changed and everything is changed. At such times we find ourselves silent and without adequate words, because homecoming does not involve coming to know any new facts about the world but merely a changed perception. Human existence ceases to be a problem to be solved and becomes a mystery to be enjoyed. The secret is that nothing is lost. Seek and you will not find. Give up the quest for the kingdom of God and you discover the holiness of your native soil.”
